Rewiring a period or listed property

Rewiring an older or listed home is about achieving modern safety without wrecking the character. That means minimum-disruption routing — lifting floorboards and using existing voids rather than chasing every wall — retaining original features and socket positions where the regulations allow, and, for listed buildings, checking whether listed-building consent is needed before work starts.

A careful, low-impact approach

Period homes reward patience. Where possible we route cables through floor voids, lift and relay floorboards, and feed down existing chases rather than cutting new ones into lath-and-plaster or original walls. The aim is a fully up-to-date installation with as little damage to the fabric as possible.

Keeping the character

We retain original socket and switch positions where the regulations allow, and can use heritage-style accessories where you want the look to match the house. Good planning up front — agreeing routes and accessory positions before we start — avoids surprises and protects period features.

Listed buildings and consent

If the property is listed, some work may need listed-building consent, and there can be conditions on what's altered. It's worth checking with the local conservation officer before starting. We work to NAPIT's heritage guidance and keep the paperwork in order for Building Control either way.

Common questions
Will rewiring damage my period features?

The goal is to avoid that. By routing through voids and existing chases and lifting floorboards rather than cutting walls, a careful rewire keeps damage to a minimum and retains original features where possible.

Do I need listed-building consent to rewire?

Sometimes — it depends on the property and what's being altered. It's best to check with your local conservation officer before work starts; we can advise on what's typically involved.

Can you match the original switches and sockets?

Yes — heritage-style accessories are available where you want the look to suit the house, alongside a fully compliant modern installation behind them.
